Cumberland : Overview
Mile 0 on the Great Allegheny Passage
Cumberland is where the Great Allegheny Passage meets the C&O Canal Towpath. Located in the mountains of Western Maryland, Cumberland boasts tree-lined streets and small town ambiance. The city gained prominence as a transportation center during the 19th century. It was the site of the beginning of the first National Road, the western terminus of the C&O Canal, and a center for the railroad industry. Amtrak’s Capitol Limited still stops in Cumberland daily (as well as in six other stops from Pittsburgh to Washington, D.C.).
Downtown Cumberland features a pedestrian mall lined with specialty shops and restaurants, galleries, and Victorian architecture. This Maryland Arts and Entertainment District hosts outdoor dining and a great Summer in the City series that includes the well-known Friday after Five event featuring live entertainment at multiple stages.
Canal Place, Maryland’s first certified heritage area, is home to the Western Maryland Scenic Railway Station and a National Park Service visitor center. Here, the city pays homage to its industrial roots and supports new business in the form of shops and restaurants.
