Frostburg : Overview

Mile 15 on the Great Allegheny Passage

Home to Frostburg State University and nicknamed the “Mountain City,” Frostburg boasts a bustling Main Street fittingly located up the hill from the Great Allegheny Passage trail access area.  The town at the top is definitely worth the climb.

From the trail, a switchback leads to Depot Street, the far terminus of the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad’s excursion route.  Upon the train’s arrival to the depot, a turntable impressively reverses it for the trip back to Cumberland.

A set of public stairs from the depot up into town leads to a charming and eclectic mountain community.  Frostburg is a designated Maryland Arts & Entertainment District with several galleries, a historic theater, and arts walks held throughout the year.  The Mountain City Coffeehouse & Creamery breathes new life into an historic gothic building with its organic and local foods and free trade coffees.  It’s just one of many great eateries in town.
